The third phase of the battle of Richmond occurred just south of town and the Federal Army of Kentucky was routed by its southern counterpart and this area is now occupied by a cemetery. |

![]() Major General “Bull “Nelson, commander of the Union Army of Kentucky, arrived at the battlefield during the third phase and attempted to rally his troops. In a classic manner "Bull" bellowed a remark disparaging the marksmanship of the southern soldiers and was mortally wounded. This was the position of the 66th Indiana infantry, the center of the third union battle line. |
