Toompea or the Upper City has been associated with the rulers of Estonia for centuries, with successive rulers utilizing the mound as a seat of power and today is the center of the government of Estonia. |
On the left is the narrow street that leads from the lower town of Reval, a thriving member of the Hanseatic trade league, to the upper town of Toompea, which was founded when the German Knights of the Sword built the stone fortress (1227-1229) and right is the much-rebuilt Toompea Castle, topped by the Pikk Hermann tower, which still dominates Toompea today and the house of the Parliament of Estonia. ![]() ![]() |
The Russian Orthodox cathedral, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, is located on Toompea and across the street from the Estonian Parliament. ![]() |
