The Grand Canal of Venice is one of the major water-traffic corridors in Venice with public transportation provided by waterbuses,water taxis and gondolas.

The Grand Canal is "s-shaped" through the central districts of Venice is thirty eight hundred meters long and thirty to ninety meters in width with one end near the Santa Lucia railway station and the other end at the Saint Mark Basin.


We enjoyeed a water-bus ride from Saint Mark's Square to the railway station and back again.

This photograph is of the Palazzo Balbi, the palace of an early seventeenth century Captian General, the equivalent of a five star admiral, who was honored with two obelisks decorating his residence.

Ca' d'Oro is a good example of Venetian Gothic architecture which blends traditional Gothic with Byzantine architecture (tall narrow arches with thin columns) with Islamic frills.
