St. Mary' Cistercian Abbey of Shruel was founded by the O'Ferrall of Annally in County Longford in 1150, burned by the English of the Pale in 1476, rebuilt and then confiscated by Henry VIII during his seizure of church lands and wealth during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. |
The O'Ferrall family has had a presence in St. Mary's Abbey and Longford at least since 1150, according to a marker placed on the site, and the tombstone and plot are for a 20th Century burial plot for members of the same family. |
