IrelandThe Emerald Isle |
I rode on a ferry across the Shannon River, happened onto a monument in the small town of Kilrush in southwest Clare, and I learned about a bit of Irish patriotism and resistance to foreign domination. |
The ferry crosses the Shannon River from Tarbert in County Kerry to Killimer, which is located in County Clare, west of Galway. The Monument I viewed is located in Kilrush, not far from Killimer, and is a monument to the memory of Irish resistance to British rule. A group of 30 to 40 Fenian,Irish patriots, attacked a horse-drawn police van, freed two captured Irish nationalists, who were never re-captured, but Allen Larkin and O'Brien were captured and executed by the English. |
