The Colosseum was originally named the Flavian Amphitheatre and the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire and one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. Construction started around 70 A.D. and the amphitheatre featured gladiator battles, sea battles, animal hunts, executions and reenactments of famous battles.
