The village of Ironbridge is known as the birthplace of the industrial revolution as the technique of smelting iron ore with coke was developed near this small village along the Severn River. In the desire to have reliable manner to cross the Severn River the first bridge constructed of cast iron was opened New Year's Day in 1781. It was constructed using carpentry technique, mortise and tendon and dovetail joints, and three hundred and seventy nine tons of iron was used.
