We stayed at a agriturismo, which in Italy is a farmhouse converted into a bed and breakfast on the slopes of Mount Etna, and explored the area by the Ionian Sea from Mount Etna to Siracusa (Syracuse).

Our 2013 Holiday

In Sicily

Our first exploration in Sicily was to visit Mount Etna after a delicious pizza in Trecastagni the evening before, where we stayed on the slopes of Mount Etna for three nights.

Mount Etna is visible from some distance and so is the steam generated from the active volcano, which has documented history of eruptions from 1500 BC to 2002.

We made our way to Rifugio Sapienza, which is a cluster of small shops selling tourist items, a few restaurants, and a cable car that takes you part-way up the slopes with a bus in conjunction to take you to the top.

Aimee is standing in front of the bus that took a very winding path to the top of Mount Etna from the end of the cable car ride.
