Syracuse or Siracusa is an ancient town on the eastern coast of Sicily bordering on the Ionian Sea and dates back 2,700 years ago to Magna Graecia, the colonization by Greeks on Southern Italy and Sicily.

Our 2013 Holiday

In Sicily

We strolled around the old town for some hours, the photograph below is taken from the waterfront, and is the Ionian Sea looking in a northerly direction at a modern section of Syracuse.

The trinacria is the emblem of Sicily, is located on its flag and dates back to the successful Sicilian Vespers revolt against Charles I of Sicily. the Norman King of Sicily. The three legs represent the three sides of the island of Sicily, although I have also heard they represent the three seas that surround this island.
