The cathedral of Syracuse is located on the spot where a place of worship existed in the eighth century BC, a Greek Temple to Athena was constructed in the 5th century BC, and some Doric columns from that temple are incorporated into the cathedral.

The cathedral dominates Piazza Duomo, which is a large oblong square on the island of Ortigia, and the historic center of Syracuse.
