The cathedral of Syracuse is located on the spot where a place of worship existed in the eighth century BC, a Greek Temple to Athena was constructed in the 5th century BC, and some Doric columns from that temple are incorporated into the cathedral.

In Sicily

The cathedral dominates Piazza Duomo, which is a large oblong square on the island of Ortigia, and the historic center of Syracuse.

The Greek Temple to the Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, survived in part the growth of Christianity as Doric columns from that temple were incorporated into the Roman Catholic cathedral.
