The cathedral of Syracuse is located on the spot where a place of worship existed in the eighth century BC, a Greek Temple to Athena was constructed in the 5th century BC, and some Doric columns from that temple are incorporated into the cathedral. |

The cathedral dominates Piazza Duomo, which is a large oblong square on the island of Ortigia, and the historic center of Syracuse. |

The Greek Temple to the Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, survived in part the growth of Christianity as Doric columns from that temple were incorporated into the Roman Catholic cathedral.
