Due to the lava flow from the eruption in 2002, the landscape was mostly barren of plants although occasional new plants were growing in spots - at the height of the Mount Etna, the landscape was barren.

Rifugio Sapienza at located at 1900 meters above sea level and from the cable car ride up from to its termination there were some growth of new plants, less so the further higher it climbed.


Steam is generated by the intense heat from the volcano and escapes from craters of the volcano.

We found some growth of plants as we descended down from the slopes of Mount Etna in our self-drive along with small hills of lava rock from previous eruptions.
